Bike tour Berlage
Hendrik Petrus Berlage (1856-1934) was an internationally renowned Dutch architect, who played an important role in the development of modern 20th century architecture and town planning in the Netherlands. The last 20 years of his life he lived in The Hague, where he has designed several buildings, among which the sublime Gemeentemuseum.
On this bicycle tour we will see all the buildings he designed in The Hague over a period of 40 years, including his own home. Some of these buildings are well known, others less so. I will tell you about the influence he had on the urban development of this city, and on other architects. I will also tell you which architects inspired him. At the end of the tour you will have learned why Berlage was (and still is) such a famous architect.
For this tour no special knowledge is required about architecture or Berlage. The goal is to enjoy the ride and all the beautiful sights that the city of The Hague has to offer!
Before we start our bicycle tour we will meet at a café in the city centre for an introduction to Berlage. After that we will first take a short walk (approx. 30 min.) in the city centre, where a number of his designs are all within walking distance. Then we will start our bicycle tour. En route we will make frequent stops to take a better look at Berlage’s buildings.
After about 1,5 hours there will be a lunch break of 1 hour near the Gemeentemuseum. You can spend this hour as you wish: to visit the museum, to have your own little picknicklunch near the museum, or to participate in a grouplunch at Brasserie Berlage. The Brasserie is also designed by Berlage. It has a sunny garden terrace with a beautiful view on the museum.
After the lunch break we will continue our bicycle tour. After about 1 ¼ hour the tour will end at the starting point.
Bicycle rent is not included. If you don’t bring your own bike, you can rent one:
– at Fietsverhuur/Rent-a-bike Den Haag, Noordeinde 39
– at The Hague Central Station with a personal OV-chipcard (an “OV-fiets”)
