Walking tour Statenkwartier

The Statenkwartier was built in the beginning of the 20th century in an area near the sea where there used to be only sand dunes. Now it is a vibrant and beautiful residential area, with the centrally situated Frederik Hendriklaan and it’s many shops and restaurants, and of course the sublime Gemeentemuseum (both architecture and collection).

The Statenkwartier was built in a period when typical Dutch neo renaissance architecture was very much in style. Red brick mansions were lavishly decorated with turrets, bay windows with stained glass, ornaments and wonderful brick masonry. In the same period art nouveau or Jugendstil was in fashion. Details of this design style can be found throughout the neighbourhood.

Before we start our walking tour we will meet at a café for an introduction to the Statenkwartier and it’s architecture. Then we will start our walking tour, which will last approximately 1 ½ hours.
